How to get along with family and friends when you don't see everything the same way

Dr. Gian C. VillatoroOctober 11, 202624 min message

Do you like to help others?

Some of you say no. It’s not always safe, especially for women. Things can go wrong, correct?

People who like to help do it because they care. I have found three reasons why. A, compassion. You simply want to help. B, you needed help once, and someone gave it to you, so you’re paying it back. And the third reason has to do with the Good Samaritan.

Why do some people walk by?

Luke chapter 10, verses 25 through 37, tells of a man who was robbed and left almost dead. Two religious men passed him by. One man stopped and did the right thing. But that one was not a religious person.

It is sad, my friend. Quite often church people, religious people, in the market, in a café, in a company, don’t always want to help.

“God is not expecting that we all have the same opinion about everything. But he expects that you will be in one accord with the people that you are in touch with.”

Is your conscience alive?

Those religious men had a dead conscience. They were filled with religion, but they just didn’t care for anybody. Did they care about the Lord God? I don’t think so.

Loyalty and human kindness is commitment with God. To keep our conscience alive, we keep reading the Bible and connecting with the Holy Spirit.

How do you set boundaries?

A lot of needy people struggle with three things: what they say, how little they thank you, and how they treat you. That’s why many stopped helping. The person they helped crossed their boundaries.

  • Do not allow arguing.
  • Do not allow nonsense talk.
  • Do not allow demands.
  • Do not allow disrespect.
  • Do not allow pressure they will use to keep taking advantage of you.

You set the theme of that relationship, my friend. The most effective way? Be serious.

“Look them in the eye and say the rules out loud.”

If they don’t see you serious, they think they can continue using you.

Flowers need water

How do you get along with your family and friends? The best analogy I can give you is flowers. Some people consider them useless, because you cannot eat them. But they add beauty to life. They are part of the creation of the Lord God.

But flowers need water. In your relationships with family and friends, that water is communication.

“Kindness is being considerate of other people’s feelings.”

When you consider their feelings, you control yourself. You say, “You know what? In fact, they have been kind of nice to me, so I’m going to show them respect and appreciation.”

Three conversation pitfalls

  1. Religion. Most of the time, people have their own view, and they really don’t care what the others think.
  2. Politics. The moment somebody brings it up, there is the explosion. And the thing is, they were good friends.
  3. Investigating. “Do not become an investigator.” Some people feel investigated by all your questions, and they shut the communication door.

Your honesty is a bridge

Become a good listener. Let them talk. Let people breathe, my friend. Give them space.

“Your honesty is a bridge, but it takes time for others to put rails on it, so you need to be patient.”

Sometimes you don’t need to see them that often. People are going through different seasons in their lives, like you do. So you say, “Okay, I’m going to wait until they are ready for me.”

The equilibrium of nature

The Lord God does not expect us to have the same view about everything, but He expects us to be in one accord.

Look at the land and the water, the sun and the moon. The moon doesn’t have light itself. It reflects the light of the sun. That equilibrium tells you that the Lord God made everything and everybody with a purpose.

So learn about your people. What do they like? Somebody is passionate about tulips. Somebody else cares for children. Somebody loves music. Find out, and engage with that.

Romans 15:1 says:

If our faith is strong, we should be patient with the Lord’s people whose faith is weak. We should try to please them instead of ourselves.

Sometimes you just have to say, “I am not going to bring this topic up.” Wait to see what they want to talk about.

Three lessons in life

Lesson one. You are blessed because someone took the time to speak to you and to listen to you, so they could teach you. Maybe your mom, your dad, your grandpa, a pastor, a godly mentor.

Lesson two. How difficult is it to accept that someone was right and you were wrong about something? Not about everything. One angle, about one thing, in one moment. Perhaps now is the time to reach out and say, “I said something that was not right. My apologies to you.” It requires humility. But it’s not going to be the end of the world.

Lesson three.

“You want to win every argument. That is pride, and it will cost you. The real win is learning to live at peace with others, getting along with them.”

That is how the Kingdom of God moves forward. The Lord God moves through you. But if you just say, “I am right,” you could become an obstacle for somebody’s faith in God.

A change in your heart

It’s a matter of a change in your heart. Take a deep breath and think, “I think I’m going to make some changes in my life.” Right there, the Holy Spirit of God is pleased with you.

In the name of Jesus, receive the forgiveness that you need from the Lord God. And shine for His glory.

One last smile

Three siblings were fighting again. The mother finally snapped: nobody talks until you can all get along. Ten seconds of silence. Then the oldest whispered, “I started the silence first.” The middle one said, “No, I did.” The youngest yelled, “Mom, they are talking.”

So let me ask you, my friend. Who do you need to be in one accord with this week?

Share this with someone who needs clarity.

Questions this message answers

Questions & answers.

What does "one accord, not one opinion" mean?

In Dr. Gian's words: "God is not expecting that we all have the same opinion about everything. But he expects that you will be in one accord with the people that you are in touch with." You can see things differently and still get along, at home, with friends and at work.

How do you set boundaries with people who take advantage of you?

Do not allow arguing, nonsense talk, demands, disrespect, or pressure of any kind. You set the theme of the relationship. The most effective way is to be serious: look them in the eye and say the rules out loud. If they don't see you serious, they think they can continue using you.

What topics cause problems with family and friends?

Dr. Gian names three: religion, politics, and becoming an investigator who digs into other people's stories. Instead, become a good listener. Let them talk, let people breathe, and give them space.

What does Romans 15:1 say about getting along with people?

"If our faith is strong, we should be patient with the Lord's people, whose faith is weak. We should try to please them instead of ourselves." In conversation, that can mean not bringing up your own topic and waiting to see what the other person cares about.

What are Dr. Gian's three lessons in life?

One: you are blessed because someone took the time to speak to you and to listen to you so they could teach you. Two: it is difficult to accept that someone was right and you were wrong about something. Three: you want to win every argument; that is pride, and it will cost you. The real win is learning to live at peace with others.

00:00Intro

[Intro song] Hey, I am Dr. Gian. Life is not a lecture. It's a set of lessons. Pull up a chair. Let's talk about how to live them.

00:33Do you like to help others?

Do you like to help others? Some of you say no. It's not always safe. Especially for women. Things can go wrong, correct? People who like to help do it because they care. I have found three most important reasons why they help. A, compassion. You simply want to help. B, you needed help once and someone gave it to you. So you're trying to pay back. But there is a third reason why people like

01:04The Good Samaritan

to help. And it has to do with the Good Samaritan story. The Gospel of Luke, chapter 10, verses 25 through 37, tells of a man who was robbed and left almost dead. Two religious men pass him by. One stopped and did the right thing. But that one was not a religious person.

01:30One accord, not one opinion

It is sad when you see quite often church people, religious people, in different places, in the market, in a cafe like this, in a company. They not always want to help. That is why today we are talking about this. You know, my friend, God is not expecting that we all have the same opinion about everything. But he expects that you will be in one accord with the people that you are in touch with. At least with

02:07Is your conscience alive?

them. Is your conscience alive, my friend? The religious men have a dead conscience, right? They were filled with religion, but their conscience was dead pretty much. And the reason is because they just didn't care for anybody. Did they care about the Lord God? I don't think so. My friend, loyalty and human kindness is commitment with God. And that is why in order to keep our conscience alive, we need to continue reading and connecting with the Holy Spirit, with the Bible. One of the main reasons why we are broadcasting 24-7, and we do it through different platforms that you can see here. The influence of good teachings, Christian programs, Christian songs, is real. It is as real as the influence of people that they talk slang, you know, on shows and everywhere. Like this guy who was speaking only slang. His language actually didn't evolve. It shrank. Right?

03:30Why people stop helping

A lot of needy people struggle with three things. What they say, how little they thank you, and how they treat you. That's why many stopped helping. The person they helped crossed their boundaries.

03:49How do you set boundaries?

How do you set boundaries? Do not allow arguing. Do not allow nonsense talk. Do not allow demands. Do not allow disrespect. Do not allow pressure of anything that they will use to keep taking advantage of you. You set the theme of that relationship, my friend. The most effective way to set boundaries? Be serious. Look them in the eye and say the rules out loud. You will say, "You cannot do this. You cannot do that. These are the rules." And you stay serious. If they don't see you serious, they think that they can continue using you. It's sad, but

04:47Getting along with family and friends

now speaking about being in one accord, and we know we all cannot have the same opinion about everything. How do you get along with your family and friends?

05:00Flowers need water

The best analogy that I can give you is flowers. You're thinking flowers. What that has to do with family and friends? Well, flowers are beautiful. Some people consider that they are useless because you cannot eat them. They don't produce anything. But it's all relative because it adds beauty to life. It's part of the creation of the Lord God. But flowers need water. In your relationship with your family and friends, that is communication, my friend. To get along with your family, you need to have good communication with them and with your friends.

05:46Kindness is being considerate

Have you ever thought about this idea? Kindness is being considerate of other people's feelings. Because you consider their feelings, you are going to control yourselves and say, "I'm not going to say those things to your family and friends." And you say to yourself, "You know what? In fact, they have been kind of nice to me, so I'm going to show them respect and appreciation." That way, you will start a good process. But I will tell you that there are some things that can become a problem in your communication with your family and your friends.

06:33Three conversation pitfalls

Three things, my friend. Number one, talk to them about religion. If you talk to people about religion, most of the time you are going to find that people really don't want to get along with anybody. They have their own view, and they really don't care what the others think. The second thing that if you can avoid in your communication with family and friends, it would be a great idea is politics. You see it every day, right? The moment that somebody brings up the topic of politics, you see what happens, right? There is the bomb. There is the explosion, the emotions, the viewpoints and angles, and as a result, there are quite often many disputes, and the thing is, they were good friends. Now, I will give you a third reason that brings problems in your communication with people, and pay attention to this. Do not become an investigator. You know, people just love to dig into the story of others. Why is that? Some people say, "Well, I care. I want to know how they are doing." Well, it sounds pretty nice, but not everybody sees that thing the same way. There are people that as soon as somebody is asking them questions about how are they doing, where they have been, what they have done, et cetera, they just feel investigated, and they will pretty quickly tell you they don't like those type of questions, and then, what's the problem? They shut the communication door, and you don't want that. One thing that will help you to continue developing good relationships and getting along with people is

08:41Become a good listener

to become a good listener. It's a very good idea to become a good listener. Let them talk. Let them talk. Let people breathe, my friend. Give them space.

08:55Your honesty is a bridge

Do you realize that your honesty is a bridge? Your honesty is a bridge, but it takes time for others to put rails on it, so you need to be patient. You're doing the right thing. You care. You want to continue that relationship. You want to get along with everybody, so you are being honest. That's the bridge, but if you're not patient, you can mess things up in that relationship. Let people breathe. Give them space. Sometimes you don't need to see them that often. You don't need to call them that often. Sometimes, you know, just give them time. People are going through different seasons in their lives, like you do, so sometimes you just say, "Okay, I'm going to wait until they are ready for me." My friend,

09:54God expects one accord

the Lord God does not expect us to have the same view about everything, but He expects us to be in one accord.

10:04The equilibrium of nature

I want you to contemplate the equilibrium of nature. Look at the land and the water. Observe the sun, the moon, and the earth. Take a look at how animals even can share a tree's shade. Have you noticed sometimes birds laying on top of cows? They are there. There is equilibrium in nature. One of the things that I admire so much about the Lord God is His intelligence in creating the whole system, the earth, the planets, the solar system. You know that the moon doesn't have light itself. The moon reflects, like the earth, the light coming from the sun. But I want you to observe this. The huge star, the sun, is the one bringing light to the moon and to the earth. But although the moon doesn't have light itself, there are seasons in the moon doing His own movements around the earth and all that. That changes things. Have you noticed that in the ocean? That fabulous equilibrium that you see in creation tells you that the Lord God made everything and everybody

11:49Learn what your people like

with a purpose, my friend. That is what you need to see. That is why you need to learn about your people. If with your friends and families, you want to have better relationships, you need to start by learning what are their likes and dislikes. Quite often you are going to get along much better and easier with anybody. If only you just know what are the things that they like, what are the things that they care about. Everyone is different. Can you imagine somebody that is so passionate about certain flowers? Imagine tulips. But you never bring that topic up. Somebody else cares for children, and you don't want to talk about kids. Somebody loves music and is always playing new songs or instruments or genres, whatever is what this person likes. One very simple thing that you can do with your family and friends is to find out what is what they like. And try to engage in your conversations with them, trying to get along.

13:10Romans 15:1

You know, I love reading the Scripture, and I want to show you here the first verse of the chapter 15 of the letter of the Apostle Paul to the Romans. Let's read it together. It says, "If our faith is strong, we should be patient with the Lord's people, whose faith is weak. We should try to please them instead of ourselves." You know, what this means is that even in conversations, sometimes you just have to say, "I am not going to bring this topic up. I'm going to wait to see what is what he wants to talk about or she wants to talk about or them in this group they are talking about." Because usually they are going to be talking about something that they care.

14:06Listening builds relationships

You see, building those relationships, getting along with people, it has to do a lot with your ability to listen, to listen. So listen carefully. What we do here in our ministry requires money. If you want to honor God, what if you send us a donation? Honor God and honor our ministry.

14:33Three lessons in life

I want to share with you three beautiful lessons in life. And I want you to get ready to, whether it is do a screenshot or pause this video if you are watching. If you are listening only, grab a piece of paper. Get ready. Because these three great lessons in life are priceless. Number one, you are blessed because someone took the time to speak to you and to listen to you so he could teach you. Someone, my friend, one day decided to talk to you. I don't know. Maybe it was your mom. Maybe it was your dad, your uncle, your grandpa, your whomever, a pastor, a friend. A godly mentor. Somebody took the time to speak to you. While he spoke with you, this person was willing to listen to you, to get to know you. And through that, this person was able to teach you things.

15:48Lesson two: when you were wrong

Lesson number two, how difficult is to accept that someone was right and you were wrong about something? Process that. Try to go back to moments in your life that now you realize you were wrong. That person was right. I am sure that you can remember at least one instance in your life like that. This is a beautiful lesson in life, my friend. The ability to finally understand, accept, recognize you were wrong about something. It's not that you are dumb or you are not intelligent enough, or that you do everything wrong. This is not what we are talking about. We are talking about one angle. One angle about one thing in a particular moment in life. How difficult is to accept that someone was right and you were wrong about something? Perhaps now is the time for you to say, "You know what? Thinking about it. Thinking about it." I remember what happened with such and such. And I made a terrible mistake of trying to establish that I was right and actually I was wrong. So perhaps this is going to inspire you, my friend, today to do something about it. To reach out and to tell this person, "Listen. Listen to this particular speaker on this particular channel." I realized that in such and such occasion, I said something that was not right. My apologies to you. You know, when you apologize that way, it's not that you are just putting yourself down and you are saying to the other person, "Okay, now step on me. I am garbage." It's not what you do. It requires humility, of course, but it's not going to be the end of the world. But now I want

18:24Lesson three: winning every argument

to share with you this third great lesson in life. Are you ready? You want to win every argument. That is pride, and it will cost you. The real win is learning to live at peace with others, getting along with them. That is how the Kingdom of God moves forward. Of course, you don't want to look like a fool. Of course, you don't want to say, "Hey, I'm sorry. I said something wrong again." Of course, you don't want that. But the real win is learning to get along with everybody. And you know what is the most wonderful thing about it? It is that the Kingdom of God moves forward when you learn that secret. Because the Lord God moves through you. The Lord God moves through you. So it could be that not just in the good angle you cooperate with the Kingdom of God, moving the Kingdom of God forward, but you could be an obstacle for the development of the Kingdom of God, for the development of some people's faith in God, because you just said, "I am right." I hope you are understanding this, my friend.

20:02More to watch and read

Precisely for that reason is that I want to encourage you to watch other teachings like this. For example, palm tree. Palm tree, it's a message that has to do with learning to be flexible. I give you great examples there. The other good message is "Mean Boss," which talks about the rules of engagement at work. You know, it's precisely at work where you can actually make a big influence in the life of many, many people. Now, if you like to read, I would like you to try this URL. Okay? So it's here on the screen. We are taking our time so you will be able to screenshot or just take a note. vchurch.us forward slash PDF bulletins forward slash WS515 dot PDF. If you want to read and download that, you are going to enjoy. My friend,

21:10A change in your heart

we are in a beautiful season in the history of humankind with so much development, with so much advancement. Now there are ways for everybody to communicate with everybody. Take advantage of that. And it's all matter of a change in your heart. And you can do it. You know that the moment that you just simply take a deep breath. And you think to yourself, I think I'm going to make some changes in my life right there. The Holy Spirit of God is just pleased with you. So you soften your heart. In the name of Jesus, receive the forgiveness that you need from the Lord God. And shine for His glory. I hope that I will see you soon. Okay?

22:11A little humor

A prideful, homeless guy turned down a sandwich and a coat from a lady. So she was confused. So she asked him, "Why do you turn down my sandwich and the coat?" The guy said, "I don't accept charity. I accept sponsorships, preferably from brands that want their logo on the most exclusive piece of real estate in town, this park bench." Three siblings were fighting again. The mother finally snapped. "That's it! I'm done!" From now on, nobody talks until you can all get along. Ten seconds of silence. Then the oldest whispered, "I started the silence first." The middle one said, "No, I did." The youngest yelled, "Mom, they are talking." There is a family cookout, and someone yelled from there, "All right, everybody, get your plate!" Uncle Ray, who has been unemployed for several months, didn't move. He just leaned back. And the launcher. "Yeah," he said. And while someone gets my plate, someone else can get my drink, too. "I'm not trying to start a career today."
