Matthew 12:25: why families divided against themselves do not survive, and four steps away from a self-destructive path

Dr. Gian C. VillatoroJuly 29, 202613 min study

Hello, dear friend, welcome to episode 194. Today, July 29, 2026: almost 40 years ago, I became a believer, exactly on a July 29. Praise the Lord for Pastor George Lopez in Guatemala. The topic of today is self-destruction, and the reading comes from the Easy-to-Read Version. Please, Lord, guide us through this study. Thank you, Jeho, for the scripture on the screen. Matthew 12:25, section B:

“The Lord said to the Pharisees, ”Every kingdom that fights against itself will be destroyed. And every city or family that is divided against itself will not survive.“”

“Well, that’s a fact.”

Last week we talked about the ability of God to know everything, even our own thoughts. Today you will learn about self-destruction.

Why families break up

Children are most of the time the result of the love of two people. But homes and families start to fight with each other, and eventually they break up.

“So I want you to see here right on the screen lack of Appreciation that’s the problem”

Why is that? Childhood abuse, or current abuse.

“The abuse the pain in the hearts of people makes them to be difficult”

If you are the result of childhood abuse, or you are a victim of abuse right now, you are in pain, and you are going to act in a very strange way because you are in pain. That makes sense.

“My friend you need to find your identity in God”

Your identity in God

John chapter 1 verse 12: believing that Jesus is the Son of God gives you the right to become a child of God.

“The power of God comes to you To show you that Jesus is the Son of God that you are sinner That you need forgiveness and that is how you become a child of God my friend”

But there are children of God who still struggle with mental health issues.

What is it to be normal?

“What is to be normal? Do you feel that you are a normal person?”

What was normal 20 years ago was not normal 10 years ago, much less now. We used to read the paper; we used to watch the news on TV. Things change. Normal things are like having a job, paying your bills, interacting with people. Some people have different personalities, but some are definitely struggling with mental and health problems. Many have low self-confidence, unresolved trauma, and in some cases the bad example of self-destructive parents.

“That’s why the apostle Paul writes to the Romans chapter 12 verse 2 saying, ”Renew your mind with God’s Word.“”

Imagine growing up in a household with an alcoholic, a drug addict, or someone with mental problems who was self-destructive. Many people who hurt themselves were raised in families with unresolved trauma.

Four steps away from self-destruction

1. Be honest with yourself.

“The first thing you need to do my friend is to be honest with yourself”

We all have our things, and that can be part of your personal characteristics. But if you honestly say to yourself, “I don’t think this is normal,” then maybe you need help.

2. Seek professional help.

“And you need to seek professional help my friend”

Especially when it is about not finding your identity in God, the professional help you need is the help of a minister of God. Not every pastor can help you. But look for someone who is decent and godly, who went to a Bible college or theological seminary, who has a good reputation and talks to you with wisdom and common sense.

“You know pastors are equipped to help people in many aspects of life”

Not just emotionally or spiritually, but with your relationships, financially, finding a job, finding a spouse, finding a purpose in life.

“Obviously you are going to go into a path of self-destruction”

That is what happens if you are hurting and you don’t get help.

3. A daily Bible study.

Not just a program to watch or a book to read, but you talking with the Lord God, with your Bible, reading the Scripture, writing your notes, with prayer and an honest heart.

4. Become accountable.

“You need to find a mature believer near you”

Being isolated is a bad thing. In my case, I am 62 years old. I have degrees, I’m a grandpa, I’m a pastor, and I oversee pastors: over 25 pastors are in training permanently with me in our online school.

“And yet I am accountable”

“Because it’s a healthy thing”

Being accountable doesn’t mean telling a person every single thing you do. But when you have questions and you are wondering about certain things, it will be good for you.

“I have so much fun talking with my mentors”

“Do it my friend You will enjoy it”

A little humor

A man who was always afraid somebody would get him received a text message from a friend who wanted to mess with him: “This message will self-destruct in 10 seconds.” He threw his phone out the window.

And another one: “I just realized that my life can’t fall apart if I never had it together in the first place.”

Share this with someone who is hurting.

Questions this study answers

Questions & answers.

What does Matthew 12:25 mean?

The Lord said to the Pharisees: "Every kingdom that fights against itself will be destroyed. And every city or family that is divided against itself will not survive." Dr. Gian: "Well, that's a fact." Homes and families that start to fight with each other eventually break up.

Why do families fall apart?

Lack of appreciation, often rooted in childhood abuse or current abuse. "The abuse the pain in the hearts of people makes them to be difficult": if you are in pain, you are going to act in a very strange way. What you need is to find your identity in God.

How do you find your identity in God?

John 1:12: believing that Jesus is the Son of God gives you the right to become a child of God. "The power of God comes to you To show you that Jesus is the Son of God that you are sinner That you need forgiveness and that is how you become a child of God my friend"

How do you get off a self-destructive path?

Four steps. "The first thing you need to do my friend is to be honest with yourself". Then seek professional help, especially from a minister of God who is godly, trained and has a good reputation. Then a daily Bible study: you talking with the Lord God, with prayer and an honest heart. And find a mature believer to be accountable to.

Why should you be accountable to someone?

"being isolated is a bad thing". Dr. Gian, a pastor who oversees pastors, says: "And yet I am accountable" "Because it's a healthy thing". It doesn't mean telling every single thing you do, but having someone to talk to when you have questions.

03:36Normal changes

You know what was normal 20 years ago It was not normal 10 years ago much less now Things change, you know, it was normal to read the paper in a paper Now It's different 10 years ago. It was normal to watch the news on TV. Now it's different Things change Now

04:03Normal things

Is one thing but some people are definitely struggling with mental problems health problems Physically mentally and that is precisely why many of them they have low self-confidence They don't see themselves the right way

04:49Unresolved trauma

They have unresolved trauma

04:51Self-destructive parents, and Romans 12:2

And in some cases they have a bad example of self-destructive parents That's why the apostle Paul writes to the Romans chapter 12 verse 2 saying, "Renew your mind with God's Word." The renewal of your understanding of your mind

05:10Raised in homes with unresolved trauma

But imagine if you are the result of a household where there was an alcoholic or a drug addict or any type of person with mental problems And it was self-destructive You know, some people hurt themselves. They cut themselves It is awful when you hear about the news of suicides and other people that do crazy things But the thing is many of them they were raised in houses Families where there was an issue with unresolved trauma

05:471. Be honest with yourself

The first thing you need to do my friend is to be honest with yourself You need to start there And think to yourself Am I a regular individual or I am very strange We all have our things, right?

06:05We all have our things

Everyone you have your things I have my things and that that could be considered, you know part of your personal characteristics

06:142. Seek professional help

But if you honestly say to yourself No, I don't think this is normal Maybe I need help. There you go And you need to seek professional help my friend And by that I don't mean that you need to go to look for those Individuals that they charge you to Go to talk to them and they just sit you know, there are jokes about it But those guys are sitting there with a notebook and they are doing whatever in the notebook and they just go Go ahead. Go ahead. And you are in a recliner or in a couch talking to that I'm not talking about necessarily that
