Luke 12:4-5: why Jesus calls us "my friends," what we are really afraid of, and the one fear that matters
Hello, my dear friend, welcome to our episode 207. The topic of today: do not be afraid. Fear God; that’s all.
Please, Lord God, guide us through this study. Amen. We read Luke 12, verses 4 and 5:
“My friends, don’t be afraid of people. They can kill you, but after that there is nothing else they can do. God is the one you must fear.”
Not only can He take your life, but He can throw you into hell. God is certainly the one you should fear.
Last week we talked about how everything is a matter of time. Today we reflect on what really matters in life. And what is that?
“It’s eternity.”
“My friends”
One of the beautiful things I love about this passage is the way the Lord Jesus begins talking. He says, “My friends.”
With the passing of the years, I have realized that I constantly use the expression “my friend,” here in the TV studio or in person, in front of people, in churches or any other setting. What is the meaning of that expression?
“I feel close to somebody.”
The Lord Jesus, Son of God Almighty, super intelligent. Nobody can be compared to Him. The only Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, our Savior, the Redeemer, the Lamb of God.
“But He had so many approaches constantly to people that were sweet like this.”
My friends, I want to tell you something special: do not be afraid of people.
Why are you frightened?
“You know my friend, God knows we sometimes feel frightened by people. And it’s true.”
The Lord Jesus says something kind of funny here: if they kill you, they cannot do anything else after that. One of my friends in Guatemala used to say, “If you are dead, what else are you going to do?”
We are frightened sometimes, especially in places where crime is so high. But why are you frightened? “Somebody might kill me.” The Lord Jesus said that. But what if they killed you? What would you be afraid of?
“Are you not certain of your eternal life?”
And why would anyone kill you? Maybe you got caught in the middle of a crossfire, an accident, a catastrophe. What are the odds, really?
The usual reasons for our fear
“But usually what is the reason of our fear?”
There are simple reasons, and I want us to think about them for a second.
Rejection. Let me tell you something: it is never going to stop.
“People will reject you.”
The Lord Jesus even said, if they did those things to Me, imagine what they can do to you.
Being unfriended. And I’m not talking about just social media. I’m talking about real life: people in your circle of acquaintances saying, “We don’t want to be friends with this guy anymore. We don’t like what he’s doing.”
Getting fired. In the workplace, that is the greatest fear. Not all the time things are going to go well in your career. Quite often they say, “I will give you this time to get a new job so you can say that you resign.”
Betrayal. On a personal level, the biggest fear is to be betrayed.
“The Lord Jesus lived with Judas. You know that.”
Some people are just mean to you. They tell you one thing and they do the other thing.
“Betrayal is pretty common.”
The one you need to fear
“But let’s go back to the point that Lord Jesus made.”
Eventually you will die. After your death, where would you be? In the afterlife. “Yeah, but I don’t know exactly where that is.” That is why He said the one you need to fear is the Lord God.
“My friend, when you fear God, basically you are saying, ‘Lord God, I don’t want to upset you. I don’t want you to send me to hell.’”
I’m going to be a good boy. I’m going to be a good girl. I’m going to follow the rules.
“And that my friend is the best decision you can make.”
“Do not fear people. Fear God. And that’s all.”
A little humor
A guy was afraid of being unfriended on Facebook. His friend said, “Don’t worry. I will always be there for you.” He said, “That was great.” But then he blocked him.
A paranoid person received a text message: “We need to talk.” He replied, “I knew it.”
A guy was always so worried about losing his job that he carried a folder in his hand all the time. One day at lunch, a coworker asked to see it. Inside: a printed spare resume. “Just in case.”
Not “just in case”
Some people have said to me:
“You know what? Just in case this thing about Jesus is real, I’m going to become a Christian.”
Like it’s a life insurance, right? My friend, no.
“It’s all about trust completely in the name of Jesus.”
I hope you are going to continue studying the Scripture with us, and I hope I will see you next time here.

00:00Welcome to episode 207
Hello my dear friend, welcome to our episode 207 today, October 28, 2026. The topic of today is "Do not be afraid. Fear God; that's all."
00:15Prayer before the study
There are some passages on the scripture. We are going to choose particularly one and we read in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Please Lord God, guide us through this study. Amen.
00:28Luke 12:4-5: don't be afraid of people
Thank you, J.H.O. for the scripture in the screen and we read Luke 12 verses 4 and 5. My friends, don't be afraid of people. They can kill you, but after that there is nothing else they can do. God is the one you must fear. Not only He can take your life, but He can throw you into hell. God is certainly the one you should fear.
01:00Last week: everything is a matter of time
Last week we talked about how everything is matter of time, correct? Well, today we will reflect on what really matters in life. And what is that?
01:13What really matters: eternity
It's eternity. One of the beautiful things that I love about this passage is the way that the Lord Jesus begins talking. He says, "My friends."
01:23"My friends"
My friends, I have realized with the past of the years that I use personally, constantly the expression "my friend." My friend when I'm speaking. Whether it's on here, on this TV studio or in person speaking in front of people, churches or any other setting, I constantly say, "My friend" or "my friends."
01:49An expression of closeness
And what is the meaning when you use that expression? This is a meaning of, the meaning is of expression of closeness. I feel close to somebody. My friends,
02:03The Lord Jesus, Son of God Almighty
the Lord Jesus, obviously Son of God, Almighty, super intelligent. Nobody can be compared to Him. The number one, right? The only Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, our Savior, the Redeemer, the Lamb of God. Beautiful.
02:27So many sweet approaches to people
But He had so many approaches constantly to people that were sweet like this. My friends, He says. My friends, I want to tell you something special. My friends. And He says, "Do not be afraid of people."
02:45God knows we sometimes feel frightened by people
You know my friend, here we go. You know my friend, God knows we sometimes feel frightened by people. And it's true.
02:56"If they killed you, they cannot do anything else"
The Lord Jesus says something kind of funny here. You noticed, He says, "Well, if they killed you, they cannot do anything else after that."
03:11A friend in Guatemala
One of my friends used to say in Guatemala, "Well, you know what? If they killed you, if you are dead, what else are you going to do?" Yeah, what else are you going to do if you are dead?
03:26Where crime is so high
And we are frightened sometimes, especially in places where crime is so high, correct?
03:36Why are you frightened?
The Lord knows that sometimes you are frightened by people, but why? Why are you frightened?
03:45Are you not certain of your eternal life?
You say, "Well, somebody might kill me." The Lord Jesus said that. But what if they killed you? What would you be afraid of? Are you not certain of your eternal life?
03:59Why would anyone kill you? What are the odds?
Well, the other interesting question would be, well, why would anyone kill you? Why? What could be the reason? Well, I was in the middle of something and I got caught in the middle of fire or there was an accident, catastrophe, whatever. What are the odds, really? What are the odds that you would be exactly there in the middle of fire, crossfire?
04:28The usual reasons for our fear
But usually what is the reason of our fear? Well, there are simple reasons and I want us to think about it for a second.
04:39Afraid of rejection
For example, are you afraid of rejection? Are you afraid of that? Well, let me tell you something. It is not going to stop ever the rejection from people. People will reject you. The Lord Jesus even said, "If those things have done to me, imagine what they can do to you."
05:01Afraid of being unfriended, in real life
Some others are afraid of being unfriended. And I'm not talking about just social media being unfriended. I'm talking about in real life. Some people are afraid that in their circle of acquaintances, for example, somebody might... "We don't want to be friends with this guy anymore because he's just going in a wrong direction. We don't like what he's doing." That's another reasonable cause to be afraid.
05:39In the workplace: getting fired
In the workplace, what is your greatest fear? To get fired, correct? And sadly, most people mostly that experience because not all the time things are going to go well for you in your career. Sometimes there are going to be situations where you just feel, you know, if I am not out of here, they are going to get rid of me. Quite often in the workplace, they say, "I will give you this time to get a new job so you can say that you resign."
06:19The biggest fear: being betrayed
But now in a personal level, the biggest fear is to be betrayed.
06:27Jesus lived with Judas
The Lord Jesus lived with Judas. You know that. But there are many other cases, not just in the Bible, but in real life, and you probably know about this. Some people are just mean to you. They tell you one thing and they do the other thing. Betrayal is pretty common. So you can be afraid of those things.
06:52Back to Jesus' point: after you die
But let's go back to the point that Lord Jesus made. Eventually you will die. After you die, after your death.
07:04Where would you be?
Well where would you be? You will be in the afterlife. Yeah, but I don't know exactly where is that? Ah, that is why he said the one that you need to fear is the Lord God.
07:19When you fear God
My friend, when you fear God, basically you are saying, "Lord God, I don't want to upset you. I don't want you to send me to hell. I am going to be a good boy. I'm going to be a good girl. I'm going to follow the rules." And that my friend is the best decision you can make.
07:43Do not fear people. Fear God. That's all.
Do not fear people. Fear God. And that's all. In the name of Jesus, I hope you understood that.
07:53Some humor
Now, would you allow me to share some humor with you?
07:57Unfriended on Facebook
A guy said that he was afraid of being unfriended on Facebook. So his friend said, "Don't worry. I will always be there for you." So he said, "That was great." But then he blocked him.
08:19"We need to talk"
A paranoid person received a text message saying, "We need to talk." So he replied, "I knew it. You all have been discussing."
08:35The spare resume
A guy was always so worried about losing his job. He had a folder in his hand all the time. At lunchtime, one day, finally one guy asked him, "Let me see that folder." He hesitated, but agreed and said, "Promise me you won't tell anyone about it." The guy agreed. So then he saw what this guy had inside of the folder. A printed spare resume. He just shook his head. Not believing that this guy had his resume there already. But the other guy said, "Just in case."
09:23"Just in case this thing about Jesus is real"
Some people living here have said to me, "You know what? Just in case this thing about Jesus is real, I'm going to become a Christian."
09:34It's all about trust in Jesus
Like he's a life insurance, right? My friend, no. It's all about trust completely in the name of Jesus. I hope you are going to continue studying the scripture with us. This was the episode 207. You know, there are tons of platforms you can continue learning. And I hope that I will see you next time here.
